Focus on School Nutrition Next Week During The Washington Conference

As Congress resumes its work after the August recess, United Fresh anticipates renewed discussions about school nutrition standards that increase servings of fruits and vegetables. Next Tuesday at the Washington Conference, United Fresh will host three outspoken voices on our nation's childhood obesity epidemic. Admiral James Barnett of Mission: Readiness will present his keynote address at the September 9 General Session Luncheon to preview an upcoming report about the threat that childhood obesity poses to our national security. That report, titled Retreat Is Not an Option, is expected to underscore the critical role that child nutrition can play to address the national security challenge.

Adm. Barnett will be joined by two other distinguished keynote speakers at the September 9 luncheon on the topic Why Fighting for Healthier School Meals Is So Important:
Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the American Heart Association
Dr. Sanchez currently serves as Chair of the Partnership for Prevention Board of Directors and Chair of the National Commission on Prevention Priorities. He also chairs the Texas Public Health Coalition.
Otha Thornton, President, National PTA
Otha Thornton is a retired United States Army Lieutenant Colonel and his last two assignments were with the White House Communications Agency and United States Forces-Iraq in Baghdad. Thornton earned the Bronze Star Medal for exceptional performance in combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2009-2010.

Update to Harmonized Standards Now Official

Changes to the post-harvest operations Harmonized Food Safety Standards that were approved by the Produce GAPs Harmonization Initiative Technical Working Group (TWG) in March are now official. No comments or concerns were received since the proposed changes were posted in June. "While the changes are more for clarification than substantive, we know that the words matter," said David Gombas, senior vice president food safety and technology and coordinator for the Produce GAPs Harmonization Initiative. "Even subtle changes can affect an auditor's interpretation of what a produce operation is expected to do. The TWG agreed that these changes were important to avoid misunderstanding and potentially adding unnecessary expectations to an operation's audit."

The TWG also recommended that the Harmonized Standards be reassessed for what policies and procedures an operation should have written rather than verbal, and recommended that an official Spanish version of the standards be created.  Working groups for both tasks will be convened soon. Please contact Erin Grether at if you are interested in participating in either working group.
