Rep. Mike Conaway, R-TX, a member of the House Agriculture Committee, will join United members for the United FreshPAC Reception & Dinner, September 9 at The Capitol Hill Club, one of Washington, DC’s most impressive destinations. Rep. Conaway is highly anticipated to be named chairman of the House Agriculture Committee in the next Congress. It is vitally important that our industry takes this opportunity to show him the significance of the fresh fruit and vegetable industry throughout the country. He will share an insider’s look at what is currently happening on Capitol Hill and what’s in store for the 2014 election just a short few weeks after the dinner.

The National Republican Club of Capitol Hill, better known as The Capitol Hill Club is one of the premier gathering spots in Washington. “Retreat Is Not an Option” Is Message from Mission: Readiness’ Admiral James Barnett at The Washington Policy Conference


Armed with a message targeting our nation’s childhood obesity epidemic, Admiral James Barnett of Mission: Readiness will present his keynote address at the September 9 General Session Luncheon of The Washington Conference. Adm. Barnett and many other retired military leaders who are members of Mission: Readiness will converge on Capitol Hill the week of United’s conference to underscore the importance of healthful nutrition for our nation’s kids.

That week, the group plans to release a national report titled Retreat Is Not an Option, along with several state-level reports targeting lawmakers who can play a pivotal role in the school nutrition discussion.

“The retired generals and admirals of Mission: Readiness strongly believe that our childhood obesity crisis is a threat to national security,” said Dr. Lorelei DiSogra, vice president, nutrition & health. “We look forward to hearing from Adm. Barnett as he and his fellow military leaders advocate for healthful nutrition policies for kids.”

Adm. Barnett will be joined by two other distinguished keynote speakers at the September 9 luncheon on the topic Why Fighting for Healthier School Meals Is So Important:

Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the American Heart Association

Dr. Sanchez currently serves as Chair of the Partnership for Prevention Board of Directors and Chair of the National Commission on Prevention Priorities. He also chairs the Texas Public Health Coalition.
Otha Thornton, President, National PTA

Otha Thornton is a retired United States Army Lieutenant Colonel and his last two assignments were with the White House Communications Agency and United States Forces-Iraq in Baghdad. Thornton earned the Bronze Star Medal for exceptional performance in combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2009-2010.

United Fresh Executive Committee Meets in Pennsylvania

United’s Executive Committee visited the Leola Produce Auction during meetings in Pennsylvania.

Chairman Ron Carkoski hosted the summer meeting of the United Fresh Executive Committee last week at the Four Seasons Family of Companies headquarters in Ephrata, PA.  The committee met to discuss ways to continue increasing value to member companies, including the new Rising Leaders Seminar at this year’s Washington Conference, and new programs on tap for 2015. 

Following the committee’s meeting at Four Seasons headquarters, the group visited the Leola Produce Auction, featuring a variety of produce grown mostly by Amish and Mennonite farmers in Lancaster, PA. During the meeting, the group discussed ways to enhance food safety education and training in Good Agricultural Practices for small producers.
